Pedro Fernandes
European Portuguese with confidence, naturalness, and purpose.
About Me
Hello! My name is Pedro Fernandes and I am a European Portuguese teacher with several years of experience teaching teenagers and adults of different nationalities and proficiency levels. I lived in the United States for about 25 years, where I also had the opportunity to work as a university professor. This international experience allows me to understand the difficulties faced by those learning a new language, living between cultures, or needing Portuguese to integrate, study, or work in Portugal. My classes are personalized, dynamic, and adapted to the pace and goals of each student. I work on conversation, pronunciation, listening comprehension, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary used in real-life situations. I also prepare students for official exams such as the CIPLE, DEPLE, and DIPLE. I use the main European Portuguese textbooks and e-books, authentic materials—news, videos, podcasts, and texts—and resources I have created. I strive to provide a welcoming, structured, and non-judgmental environment where students can make mistakes, clarify doubts, and gain confidence. As a teacher and writer, I have a deep connection with the Portuguese language and I enjoy sharing not only the language itself, but also the culture, history, and customs of Portugal. If you wish to learn European Portuguese with confidence, naturally, and at your own pace, I would be pleased to accompany you on this journey.
About My Lessons
My European Portuguese classes are personalized, dynamic, and adapted to each student's level, pace, and goals. I work with teenagers and adults, from complete beginners to advanced students. In class, we develop the following in a balanced way: * conversation and fluency; * pronunciation of European Portuguese; * listening comprehension; * reading and writing; * grammar and vocabulary; * Portuguese for everyday situations; * preparation for official exams, such as CIPLE, DEPLE, and DIPLE. I use a wide library of European Portuguese textbooks and e-books, authentic content—news, videos, podcasts, music, and texts—and materials I have created. I don't rigidly follow a single textbook: I select the resources best suited to each person's needs and interests. Correction is done constructively and in a balanced way. During conversation, I strive to preserve the student's fluency and confidence, immediately correcting errors that hinder comprehension and reserving others for later review. I also assign homework adapted to each student's availability, which may include grammar exercises, short readings, listening comprehension activities, written production, or preparing topics for conversation. My goal is to provide welcoming, structured, and practical lessons in which students can learn without fear of making mistakes and use Portuguese with increasing confidence, autonomy, and naturalness.
